Safeguard clip
ballpoint pen with calendar, made in the USA c.1965. The pen is crafted from a chrome-plated metal cap with vertical striations over white barrel with steel clip/trim. Plus, it features a promo for a Chicago neighborhood bank of the past; Northwest National Bank at one of the city’s many “six corners” intersections.
This style of SHEAFFER ballpoint was introduced in the mid 1960’s and is notable for its toggle-actuated "Safeguard" clip which was depressed to extend the ink refill. With the refill extended, the clip rests in a low position and cannot be put over a shirt pocket until disengaged, retracting the refill. Ink stains on clothing were a major concern back then and this innovative design helped to reduce the problem. This Safeguard has the not-so-common bonus calendar feature.
So, please see my large photos and read the remaining description to decide if this neat SHEAFFER pen should be yours.
This SHEAFFER pen is in clean, very good condition. The pen measures 5¼” long by ⅜” at its widest. There are no cracks or scratches, just some light scuffs and tiny marks from use over the years. Plus, the barrel threads into the cap properly, securely. And the bank promo graphics look nice with minimal attrition of the enamel while the calendar seems perfect. Overall, this old pen presents very nicely.
Most importantly, the mechanism works perfectly. Depressing the clicker extends the point and pressing it again retracts it without fail. The installed SHEAFFER refill is still writing, but I can’t say for how long. When it empties, SHEAFFER refills, as you know, are widely available. Lastly, the Safeguard pen has nice balance, good mass, and feels great on paper.
As pictured and described, this vintage SHEAFFER Safeguard calendar ballpoint pen is offered at a competitive price.
