Item: One Pro Football Hall of Fame letter opener. Solid metal construction with an antique copper finish.
One side of the handle states "ENSHRINEES CIVIC DINNER JULY 29, 1983" in raised letters on a faux-pigskin background, with the logo of the Pro Football Hall of fame (the Pro Football Hall of Fame building facade) in a circle to the right of the lettering. The logo says "CANTON, OHIO" under the facade, and around the circumference of the circle is "★ PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME ★ FESTIVAL". The other side of the handle has no markings other than the faux-pigskin background. Please see the provided images.
Comments: According to the Pro Football Hall of Fame website, the class of 1983 inductees are:
Bobby Bell - Linebacker / linebacker / defensive end
Sid Gillman - Coach
Sonny Jurgensen - Quarterback / quarterback
Bobby Mitchell - Wide receiver / wide receiver / halfback
and
Paul Warfield - Wide receiver / wide receiver
The annual Enshrinees Civic Dinner is attended by enshrinees, NFL team owners, and guests.
Dimensions: ~7 inches from tip to end of handle, and the handle is ~1/8 inch thick.
Company: No manufacturer noted, and no place of manufacture noted.
Condition: Pre-owned, used. A little bit of wear, especially at the tip of the letter opener. The blade is ever-so-slightly wavy, possibly the way the metal was cast. Also, the blade is not perfectly flush with the handle (see attached edge-on image). No cracks, chips, or other flaws noted. Please carefully examine the attached images.
A not-often seen item of Pro Football memorabilia.   A Google search of -- "enshrinees civic dinner" "letter opener" -- yielded only one result:   The same letter opener is described--"...a copper-colored metal 7-inch letter opener engraved in black with the caption “Pro Football Hall of Fame Festival Enshrinees Civic Dinner July 29, 1983”-- (but not imaged) in an auction lot of items that had belonged to Bronko Nagurski.
1983 was a special year in the history of the Professional Football Hall of Fame, since it marked the twentieth anniversary of its dedication on September 7-8, 1963.  It is likely that Bronko Nagurski attended the dinner in 1983, because he was one of the original 17 Hall of Fame inductees at the dedication in 1963.
